About Us
The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is an independent non-profit organisation and a leader in the discipline of blood transfusion.
We operate in eight out of nine provinces in South Africa (the Western Cape is serviced by the Western Cape Blood Service), and we also provide crucial support to other countries in the SADC region.
We supply over one million blood products annually and are rated among the top blood services in the world due to world-class testing and collection protocols which ensure that transfused blood is always of top quality.
The blood we collect is processed into its constituent components, red blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Therefore, in principle, a single blood donation can save at least three lives.
We are also highly regarded for the research we conduct and contribute to, internally and externally.
Blood Collection and Blood Drives
In South Africa, only one person in about 140 donates blood regularly. This means that most of the time we are very close to running out of blood. This places the lives of thousands of people who need blood transfusions at risk every day.
We aim to collect an average of 3000 units of blood daily across the country to keep up with the demand and have some reserve stock.
Blood collection is done at our Donor Centres and via Blood Drives.
