Blood Transfusion Recipient Stories
Giving blood saves lives. All donors know this, and many non-donors too, at least in theory.
Seeing a practical example of someone who was saved by a blood transfusion makes it hit home in a different way though.
Watch these inspiring recipient stories:
Paballo
At just three months old, Paballo Aphane was diagnosed with pneumonia. To survive, he relies on weekly blood transfusions. Thanks to the generosity of blood donors, Paballo can enjoy an active life, just like any other three-year-old. This video is a heartfelt message of gratitude from his parents.
Anle
Anle was diagnosed with Primary Immunodeficiency (PID) in 2004. She relies on regular blood product transfusions, specifically Immunoglobulin replacements, every four weeks for life. Anle’s story highlights the ongoing need for blood and plasma donations, as some individuals require continuous transfusions, not just one-time treatments. Thanks to these transfusions, Anle can remain infection-free and participate in activities that she would not otherwise be able to.
Mbali
Without a safe and sufficient blood supply, Mbali wouldn’t live the life she is living today. Being diagnosed with aplastic anaemia means that she needs regular blood transfusions to stay healthy and active, things most people take for granted.
Jacob
Jacob Mohapi has been involved in two near-fatal car accidents and received blood on both occasions. He and his son Thabang share an extremely close bond. This bond is reinforced by the gratitude they both have for people who donate blood. Because of blood donors, their family unit has remained intact, and they can continue to share their lives and experiences.
Bokang
Bokang is making an amazing difference to the people around him every day. He recovered from a life-threatening brain tumour and had to receive numerous blood transfusions as a result.
Suretha
Suretha Campher is a school teacher in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. She is a regular participant in three World Transplant Games, where she has won 5 gold medals for the long jump, 100m and 200m relay, and has smashed a world record for the 100m in the process. She suffered total kidney failure and had to receive an enormous amount of blood products following transplant complications.
Matt
Life for Matt Lathan (26), a personal trainer from Randburg, took a sudden turn for the worse when a night at the movies ended with him lying in the casualty ward with excruciating abdominal pain caused by peritonitis and septicaemia. Due to this, blood poisoning began to destroy his kidneys and liver. To prevent further damage, Matt was given several large blood transfusions to replace his toxic bloodstream.
