The glitz, glamour, applause and adulation that are part of the Idols competition have done little to change the charismatic Khaya Mthethwa.
Winner of the coveted Idols title in 2012, the man who thrilled judges and audiences alike with his talent is now an ordained pastor who has also built an enviable reputation as a gospel music star with his 2014 album The Uprising.
Rounding up his considerable achievements is one of which he is particularly proud. He is now an SANBS Ambassador and underlined his commitment to the cause by donating four units of blood during 2016.
The fact that he is using digital platforms to spread the word about blood donations is particularly exciting for SANBS. We believe that many of his 97 000 Facebook followers could be tempted to follow their idol to an SANBS donation centre. The singing dynamo, whose blood group is B+, told the SANBS team that he began donating blood in 2016.
He took the step not only because it was the right thing to do, but also because the testimonies of people whose lives were saved by donations was ‘overwhelming’. Helping by giving blood was personally fulfilling.
Asked why he had chosen to become an SANBS ambassador, his reply was simple and in line with his calling as a pastor: “I always say that I’m in the business of saving lives. This is my contribution.”
“Let’s get the testimonies out there. Let people know and see the patients whose lives were changed, positive stories always have an impact on one’s life. This will encourage more people to come on board and donate blood.”
“The approach and commitment of the Umlazi star to the SANBS cause has been tremendous and will contribute to saving lives for sometime to come.
His influence has been tremendous and SANBS looks forward to working with Khaya for many years to come.
